Irreversible electroporation (IRE) is a novel, non-thermal ablation modality, which was used to treat tumors. It uses high-voltage, low-energy DC current pulses to induce cell death. The application of an electric field across a cell leads to the formation of nanopores, a process called poration. IRE has shown promise to overcome some limitations of thermal ablative technologies.
